Knowledge Corner & FAQ’s
Common parameters of water testing depends on the purpose of assessment, the purpose can be variety like fitness as drinking water, agriculture use, wastewater treatment performance, discharge requirement as per the pollution control boards or regulatory bodies or national discharge standards, boiler water, cooling tower water, swimming pool, RO plant design, groundwater contamination assessment and many others.
For example, if the use is for;
-
Drinking water—Common parameters can be pH, TDS, TSS, Turbidity, E Coli, Total Coliform, Nitrate, Sulphate, Hardness, Floride, Chloride, Residual Chlorine, trace contaminants like pesticides, heavy metals like Arsenic, Chromium, Lead, Iron, Nickel, Boron, Manganese etc. and many other depending on the drinking water standards which is being referenced like in India it is IS 10500: 2012, in USA it is NPDWR as per US Environmental Protection Agency.
-
Boiler water—pH , Alkalinity, Phosphates, Sulphates, Calcium , Magnesium , Chloride, TDS, TSS and others
-
Effluent treatment plant performance assessment or discharge standards for industrial effluent—COD, pH, BOD, Total Phosphorous, Total Nitrogen, Nitrate, Total Coliform, Total Suspended Solids
-
Swimming pool– Total Coliform, Faecal Streptococci, Residual Chlorine, pH etc.
-
Cooling tower water testing—pH, Sulphates, Phosphates, Hardness, Coliform, Alkalinity, Calcium, Chlorides, Silica
This Indian Standard (Second Revision) 10500 was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Drinking Water Sectional Committee had been approved by the Food and Agriculture Division Council. The standard was first published in 1983. According to a report jointly prepared by the World Health Organization and the World Bank, approximately 1,230 million people lacked access to safe water supplies in 1975.
There are around more than 62+ parameters which are divided into several categories like
-
Organoleptic & Physical Parameters (Color, Odour, pH , Taste, Turbidity, TDS)
-
General Parameters concerning substances undesirable (Aluminium, Ammonia, Detergents, Barium , Borron, Calcium , Chloramines, Chloride, Copper, Flouride, Free Residual Chlorine, Iron, Magnesium Manganese, Mineral Oil, Nitrate, Phenolic Compounds, Selenium etc totalling 20+)
-
Parameters concerning toxic substances (Cadmium , Arsenic, Mercury, Leads Trihalomethanes, Pesticides totalling 12+ parameters)
-
Pesticides like Malathion, Parathion, Lindane and more than 18+
-
Radioactive materials
-
Bacteriological quality like E Coli, total coliform etc.
IS: 14543:2004outlines the requirements for packaged drinking water in India. This standard covers various aspects including physical properties, chemical composition, microbiological quality, and limits for radioactive residues. You can get your water testing at SWA Environmental Pvt Ltd’s Environmental Testing Laboratory Division which is a NABL accredited laboratory with a special request to include a statement of conformity to the standard.
pH of potential of hydrogen is the measure of the concentration(activity to be more precise) of H+ or H3O+ ion in water. The formulae for calculating pH = -log10 (H+) known to indicate whether the solution is acidic, basic or neutral. The pH is commonly measured by a pH meter which works on the principle of potentiometric measurement of the water which is convert to a scale of 0-14. 7 being neutral, < 7 being acidic and >7 being basic.
Fun fact: Did you know a solution can be so acidic which can practically have a pH of < 0 as well. Such solutions are.
TDS or total dissolved solids is the measure of all inonic or non ionic solubilized solids (or many times referred to as filterable residues). The same can be ionic salts, organic compounds like sugar, gases like carbon dioxide which can form weak acid in water
The COD or chemical oxygen demand can also be referred to as amount of organic contamination in the water. COD is typically measured by open reflux method by measuring the consumption of potassium dichromate for oxidation of organic matter through a titration via Ferrous Ammonium Sulphate. The detailed step by step method can be referred in following link Laboratory Analysis.
Hardness in water can be tested by titration against EDTA as per the IS 3025-21 (2009)
The detailed step by step method can be referred in following link Laboratory Analysis.
Water testing or water quality testing in India can cost anything between as low as Rs 200 to Rs. 50,000 depending on the parameters on wants to get tested. Typical drinking water analysis for5-7 parameters costs around Rs. 1500-2000. You can get your indoor air quality testing for VOCs and pollutants at SWA Environmental Private Limited India’s leading water & air testing laboratory based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat
Typical indoor pollutants include PM2.5, Volatile Organic Compounds like Benzene etc. arising due to gas leakages or in residential environments due to use of paints and solvents which can have harmful respiratory effects along with neurological effects on young babies
Testing of ambient air is carried out by variety of methods depending on the parameters to be analysed, for example.
PM10 or respirable dust is measured using a Respirable dust samples based on principle of collecting dust particles from air and weighing filter paper before and after. Detailed analysis can be found from IS 5182
Similarly, gaseous (SO2, NOx, H2S etc.) sampling can also be carried out as per various standard methods by passing the gas through absorbing media and measuring the concentration dissolved gas in the solution by titration or spectrophotometric method.
